Red Ball: Gesture Based TV Remote Control

Think back to that 2002 Tom Cruise movie Minority Report and all the advanced technology they used, such as the flexible displays, 3D holograms and more closely on topic, the hand gesture-based computer interfaces. If you need a refresher, check out the video below. At the time it seemed pretty far-fetched, dream worthy and more like science fiction generated didn’t it? Even today, having advances like the touch interface with the iPhone and Droid handsets, as well as the Nintendo Wii, which is gesture-based - but still, you use a remote.
Well, guess what? Dale Herigstad, the Chief Creative Officer of WPP’s Schematic unit that created the idea, recently confirmed that they are in fact in the process of developing an interface just like the dreamy Minority Report one with some cable companies, and it is predicted to release within the next year. The new interface will not require “big, sweeping” gestures, but will operate on the television via simple hand motions. Let me repeat. Simple hand motions. Therefore no remote, no need to fingerprint your flat screens, just navigating with your hand motions. Seems like Spielberg made an impression.
